Making new friends when you’re over 50

Turning 50 can mark a new exciting chapter in your life. As family life starts to slow down you might want to discover new things but the big question is, how? We have put together a few suggestions on how you can pick up new hobbies and meet new friends along the way.

Making new friends when you’re over 50 can seem like a daunting task. But with a little effort and the right attitude, it can be as easy as pie.

Use Meetup

Meetup is a brilliant website where you can find private and charity groups local to you. Just put in your postcode and Meetup will give you a comprehensive list of groups in your area.  There is a wide range of groups available to suit any interest such as walking, cooking or gardening. There are also groups exclusively for over 50s.

Whether you volunteer in a charity shop or you join a fundraising group, volunteering can open doors. By volunteering, not only are you getting actively involved in your community, you will also make friends and have fun along the way. If you’re a busy person, you could ask about microvolunteering opportunities. Every little helps.

So next time you walk down your local high street, pop into a charity shop and ask how you can volunteer. It’s a great way to make new friends when you’re over 50.

Sign up for classes

Maybe you have always wanted to join a photography course, or you fancy learning upholstery. Well, now is as good a time as any to take up a hobby. Learn something new while making new friendships. And if you’re worried about committing to something long term then why not start off with a 1 day workshop and gradually build up to something bigger.

Join forums

Making new friends when you’re over 50 can be challenging. But the Internet’s here to help. Make yourself heard by joining a forum. By being a forum member you can regularly chat with other members via the internet on topics that you feel passionate about. Sometimes you just want to get something off your chest and forums are the perfect platform to give your opinion. There are popular forums such as Over 50s Forum and Buzz50.

Join a social networking site/dating site

Websites such as Over Fifties Friends and Fun Over 50 are sites where you sign up and meet people online. You might not want to find ‘love’ exactly but these sites are also good for people to find new friends. You can join chat rooms and speak to other over 50s. And if you feel comfortable you can also meet them in real life. These sites promise to be secure, however, you must consider your safety before meeting strangers.

Be a regular

You might have a coffee shop that you regularly visit, or use the same route to walk your dog every day. By doing this you will undoubtedly meet other regulars too and over time develop friendships.

Of course this is not guaranteed, but by getting out and about you will have a greater chance of developing friendships. So next time you’re reading a book at home, why not consider doing it in a coffee shop instead? You never know who you’ll meet.

Meeting new people can be a daunting experience but the important thing to remember is that there are lots of people who are in the same boat as you. So why not give it a go, there is a whole new world out there to discover.
