Supporting access to education

By Gemma Bellamy 29th May 2025

The cost of education and training can be a barrier for many young people and their families.

This is why we created our Young Person’s Education Grants in 2019 to support our customers with these costs.

Removing barriers to education

Our Inspiring Better Futures vision underpins our commitment to remove barriers to education and financial wellbeing.

We firmly believe access to education – and the career opportunities this opens – should be available to everyone.

Research by Child Poverty Action Group found that the cost of sending a child to secondary school comes to at least £1,755.97 a year – that’s £39.01 a week.

With many families already struggling to make ends meet, it’s no surprise that they’re just not able to afford the essentials their children need to do well at school. While some families on a low income can get government assistance to help with these costs, many still need support.

OneFamily’s Young Person’s Education Grants

OneFamily customers can apply for a Young Person’s Education Grant to help fund:

  • laptops
  • travel costs
  • equipment for apprenticeships and more.

This can help relieve some of the financial burden faced by our customers who are either in education or training themselves, or supporting a young person to achieve their full potential.

We also work with charity partners who are championing access to education and employment, and you can read about their work in our community section.

We’re proud to have awarded over £62,000 to 253 young people in 2024, helping them to invest in a better future!

How our Young Person’s Education Grants work

  • Applications can be made on behalf of recipients aged 11-19.
  • There are two rounds of Young Person’s Education Grants per year.
  • In each round, applications open one month before the draw takes place.
  • Grants are awarded following a randomised draw.
