Uploading a video to YouTube

If you have a video that represents your project in any way – for example, tells the story of someone who has been or will be affected by it – this is a fantastic piece of content to add to your project page and other places you’re promoting your application. The easiest way to do this is by uploading your video to YouTube and then providing the link to people when you want to show them.

Creating a YouTube account

If you have a Gmail account or any Google account, you can use this to log into YouTube as Google owns it. However, if not, it’s really easy to create one from the YouTube homepage. Select “Sign in” on the top right hand corner of the page, and when you’re taken to the sign in page, select “Create an Account”:

  • Fill in your details. You can either use an existing email address, or you can create a new, Gmail address as part of the process.
  • Once you’ve submitted this form, you’ll get an email with a verification link. Follow this link and you’ll be prompted to sign in again – use the details you’ve just created.
  • YouTube will now give you the option to subscribe to people – you can skip this if you want to. When you’re ready to upload your video, select “Upload” from the top right hand corner:

You’ll have to complete a couple more details before you can upload, and will have the option to add a photo if you’d like to. Once you’ve done this you’ll be taken to the upload screen:

  • If you’re uploading a video to promote your project with, it’s best to keep it public so that everyone can view it, but if you’re concerned about privacy you can choose to make the video “Unlisted”, which means that only people you give the link to will be able to view it. When you click “Select files to upload” a popup will appear and you’ll be able to upload your file from wherever it’s saved on your computer.
  • While the video is uploading, you can add a title and description. Sometimes videos can take a long time to upload so be prepared to wait a little! The longer the video, the longer it will take to upload. YouTube lets you upload videos up to 15 minutes long.
  • While you are waiting for your video to upload, you can navigate to other pages on YouTube or even leave the site altogether. When your video has been uploaded, you will get an email telling you so – you can either forward this email to those you want to see your video, or you can send them the direct link – or share it on Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Videos on your project page

You can also embed your video on your project page. Make sure you are signed into the OneFamily website, and go to your page. Click “Edit” underneath project photos, and you will be taken to the Media Gallery. Here you can add the title you want for your video, along with the YouTube URL. Once you’ve done this, select “Add Video”.

When you go back to your project page, the video should be there instantly.
