Newquay Rowing Club is celebrating their fantastic achievement of winning the OneFamily Foundation Community Award of £25,000! The club secured the highest number of votes in the Youth and Affiliated Organisations category thanks to the amazing support from its members and the local community in Cornwall and beyond.

Newquay Rowing Club is a not for profit club helping schools, charities, armed forces and local people of all ages, abilities and disabilities to row pilot gigs since it was first founded in 1921. The funding will help transform the current clubhouse with updated facilities including a new and improved function room, a gym and a pilot store for 11 gig rowing boats.

OneFamily customer, Sue Handford nominated Newquay Rowing Club for the award and was over the moon when the winners were announced.

“This is fantastic news! It is so great to help a sport that I love and a club that does so much for the sport and wider community. Newquay’s sports clubs, businesses, tourism-makers and the wider community have all played a vital role in us achieving our goal and we can’t thank them enough.”

The club is also home to the Cornish Pilot Gig Rowing Championships that take place every year at the start of each rowing season. The event sees 700 male and female rowers take part in the biggest gig rowing event of the year. With their new facilities in place, the rowers and spectators will be able to make use of the new changing rooms, showers and bathroom facilities.

“Our volunteers have been raising funds for many years to build an extension that will benefit the local people and the national rowing community, which visits our club throughout the year. We can now offer a full-service club to our supporters and the wider community all year round.”
John Cuthill, Chairman of Newquay Rowing Club

With the additional funding from the OneFamily Community Award, the club will be there for even more generations to come.

We can’t wait to go back and see the transformations!
