Simple ways to make your life greener

Living a greener life doesn’t mean making huge changes to your lifestyle…

Small changes, big difference

There are many small changes we can make in our homes, gardens and routines to play our part in caring for the environment and taking care of our planet.

Here are a few tips on things that you can incorporate very easily into your day to day life which can help make a difference:

Reduce your water consumption

There are many ways you can do this. Try and spend less time in the shower. When you do a clothes wash, make sure you have a full load which means you’re not wasting water and energy. Fix any leaky taps you might have - as even a small leakage can waste a significant amount of water.

Save the amount of energy you use

Unplug your electrical goods (your tv etc), devices and chargers when you’re not using them. Use rechargeable batteries. Although these can be expensive they are better for the environment and will also save you money in the long run. Did you know that turning your thermostat down by just one degree could save up to 10% on your bill?

Go online

If you can, switch to paying your bills and viewing your finances online. This will save you time and helps reduce paper waste.

Change your shopping habits

If you make a habit of shopping little and often instead of a big supermarket shop you can make sure you don’t waste food by being tempted to buy more than you need (those infamous buy one get one free offers!). This will help reduce the amount of out of date food you might end up throwing away.

Try and buy more locally and seasonally, as well as helping to reduce the carbon footprint created by airfreighting fresh produce, you’ll be supporting your local farmers and community.

Recycle your food as well as plastics and glass

Why not buy a compost bin? They’re not expensive and these days you can buy smaller ones and bins that don’t let smells out, so you can keep one indoors if you need to. You’ll be putting he food you might normally throw away to good use and helping your plants grow and thrive.

These are just a few examples of the simple changes you can make to live a greener life. As you can see it doesn’t mean making major changes. It can be as easy as switching a light off when you leave a room - and in many instances it can save you money too!
