Wiltshire veteran gets new lease of life thanks to OneFamily Personal Grant

OneFamily Foundation awards £500 grant to fund a new mobility scooter

An ex-serviceman from Wiltshire has been awarded a Personal Grant from the OneFamily Foundation, which will help him regain his independence.

Ken Bell, aged 59, suffers from long-term spinal pain after injuring himself during his service in the Royal Air Force. The pain and pressure on his spine has recently been made worse by two strokes, reducing his mobility and making it difficult for him to get out and about. When his wife, Debbie, became too ill to push his wheelchair due to her own battle with cancer, it rendered him virtually housebound.

Fortunately, as him and his wife are customers of OneFamily, a mutually-owned financial services company, they were able to apply to the OneFamily Foundation for a Personal Grant.  The money has helped purchase a mobility scooter for Ken and as a result, his quality of life has improved immeasurably.

Ken said:

“Before being able to purchase my mobility scooter, it was hard for me to really get out of the house and spend time with my family.  Thanks to the Personal Grant from the OneFamily Foundation, I’ve been able to buy a mobility scooter and I can honestly say it has given me back my life.

“Because of my wife’s ill-health, simple day-to-day things like going to the shops or enjoying some fresh air became almost impossible. My wife has been so brave battling cancer, but finding the strength to push my wheelchair was becoming more and more difficult for her. Now we can go out together again, me on my new mobility scooter and her walking alongside. In truth the Foundation has given us both a wonderful gift.”

OneFamily is a financial mutual, providing products and services across investments such as Junior ISAs, savings, health and life insurance products to help families work together to meet the  demands of modern life.  As a customer-owned business it is run for the benefit of its members.  The OneFamily Foundation redistributes a portion of the organisation’s profits, and aspires to make up to £5 million available to members over the next five years to help them, their families and their local communities.  In 2015 alone OneFamily Foundation Personal Grants had given 467 people the equipment, time or knowledge they needed to improve their lives.
