Choir hits the high notes after £5,000 award win

A Dundee-based choir will appoint a new musical director after winning £5,000 in a national competition.

Total Recall Memories Choir was awarded the money as part of the OneFamily Foundation Community Awards, which are run twice-yearly and provide life-changing sums to organisations, groups and projects across the UK.

The choir, which has 45 members and holds rehearsals at Meadowside St Paul’s Church, is open to people with Alzheimer’s and dementia. It will use the money to continue to fund rehearsal space, and to appoint a musical director to help the choir with its summer and Christmas shows.

Total Recall Memories Choir was nominated for a Community Award by Frances MacLeish, a OneFamily customer, who is a member of the choir and also its treasurer. It was one of 24 organisations presented with an award in this latest round.

Denise Main, chair of committee at Total Recall Memories Choir, said:

“As an independent organisation, funding is essential and we’re thrilled that so many people voted for us.

“Our choir is a community that welcomes Alzheimer’s and dementia sufferers, as well as their carers. It’s a place where we can socialise and practice our hobby, and helps our members to cope with whatever difficulties they may be facing.”

The Community Awards are run by the OneFamily Foundation, an organisation set up by financial mutual OneFamily to redistribute a proportion of its profits to help its customers, their families and local communities.

Karl Elliott, marketing director at OneFamily, said:

“The Total Recall Memories Choir is a fantastic organisation that helps people suffering with dementia to come to terms with the condition and meet new friends.

“Our Community Awards are designed to benefit the causes closest to our customers’ hearts, giving community groups and projects the funding boost they need to continue to offer their vital work.

“The next Community Awards will launch on Monday 19 September, so I’d urge all Dundee customers with an active policy to get involved and nominate a cause close to their heart.”

Through the OneFamily Foundation, OneFamily aspires to make £5million available to its customers – to improve their lives or to help them make a positive difference to their local communities.”
