£5,000 boost will make the welcome even warmer at Preston school

Posted in: Foundation Date added:

A Preston school is celebrating after winning £5,000 in a national competition to help make it more accessible for pupils with special needs.

St Mary Magdalen’s Catholic Primary School, in Penwortham, was awarded the money as part of the OneFamily Foundation Community Awards, which are run twice-yearly and provide life-changing sums to organisations, groups and projects across the UK.

The school, which has more than 200 pupils, entered the awards because its reception classroom was built 101 years ago and has steep steps to gain access from outside.

St Mary Magdalen’s Catholic Primary School will use the money to build a decked area with a gradual slope, so all pupils can access their classroom and the outdoor area in the same way.

The project was nominated for a Community Award by Deborah Hogarth, a OneFamily customer, who is a parent helper at the school. St Mary Magdalen’s Catholic Primary School was one of 24 organisations presented with an award in this latest round.

Deborah said:

“We want everyone to feel that they are part of the class, which would be difficult if they weren’t able to use the same entrance as everyone else.

“This is a very friendly and welcoming school and this award will help us to make sure that all of the children feel included and accepted with access to all the outdoor learning.

“Everyone in the school community, from pupils to parents and grandparents to governors, will know that they are considered, respected and valued in our community.”

The Community Awards are run by the OneFamily Foundation, an organisation set up by financial mutual, OneFamily, to redistribute a proportion of its profits to help its customers, their families and local communities.

Karl Elliott, marketing director at OneFamily, said:

“This is a fantastic project by a much-loved community school that is committed to giving children the best start in life.

“Our Community Awards are designed to benefit the causes closest to our customers’ hearts, giving community groups and projects the funding boost they need to continue to offer their vital work.

“The next Community Awards will launch in September, so I’d urge all customers in Preston with an active policy to get involved and nominate a cause close to their heart.”

Through the OneFamily Foundation, OneFamily aspires to make £5million available to its customers – to improve their lives or to help them make a positive difference to their local communities.
