Community Garden receives £5,000 boost after award win

A North Yorkshire-based community garden will be creating a special sensory garden after winning £5,000 in a national competition.

Ripon Walled Garden was awarded the money as part of the OneFamily Foundation Community Awards, which are run twice-yearly and provide life-changing sums to organisations, groups and projects across the UK.

The community garden currently attracts more than 4,000 visitors to its gardens, café, garden nursery and shop each year, and will use the money to build a new sensory attraction for visitors with special needs.

Ripon Walled Garden was nominated for a Community Award by Nick Redfern, a OneFamily customer, who volunteers at the gardens. It was one of 24 organisations presented with an award in this latest round.

Lindsay Tanner, CEO at Ripon Walled Garden, said:

“We promote community and enable local people to pursue interests, learning, and healthy living. The funding will help us continue our work, creating a sensory garden to benefit local families and those with special needs.

“We’re thrilled to have won and want to say a big thank you to everyone who voted for us – the money will make a big difference.”

The Community Awards are run by the OneFamily Foundation, an organisation set up by financial mutual, OneFamily, to redistribute a proportion of its profits to help its customers, their families and local communities.

Karl Elliott, marketing director at OneFamily, said:

“Ripon Walled Garden’s six staff and 25 volunteers work hard to change the lives of vulnerable or disabled people, and we’re delighted to award them funding to help.

“Our Community Awards are designed to benefit the causes closest to our customers’ hearts, giving community groups and projects the funding boost they need to continue to offer their vital work.

“The next Community Awards will launch on Monday 19 September, so I’d urge customers in North Yorkshire with an active policy to get involved and nominate a cause close to their heart.”

Through the OneFamily Foundation, OneFamily aspires to make £5million available to its customers – to improve their lives or to help them make a positive difference to their local communities.
