Devon cricket club bowled over by £5,000 award win

A Plymstock-based community cricket club will be modernising its training facilities after winning £5,000 in a national competition.

Plymstock Cricket Club was awarded the money as part of the OneFamily Foundation Community Awards, which are run twice-yearly and provide life-changing sums to organisations, groups and projects across the UK.

The club, which has been running for more than 100 years, can now invest in improved training facilities and equipment to help develop skills such as batting, bowling and wicket-keeping. It’ll also be investing in a new mobile practice net.

Plymstock Cricket Club was nominated for a Community Award by Paul Birleson, a OneFamily customer, who coaches the under-9s team and whose sons attend the club. It was one of 24 organisations presented with an award in this latest round.

Malcolm Orchard, chairman and coach at Plymstock Cricket Club, said:

“We have more than 140 members who will be ecstatic that we’ve won. Our club is run by volunteers, who truly care, and who will be able to benefit from our new equipment.

“The money from the OneFamily Foundation is going to make such a difference and means we can help to develop the cricket stars of tomorrow. We’d like to thank everyone for getting behind us.”

The Community Awards are run by the OneFamily Foundation, an organisation set up by financial mutual OneFamily to redistribute a proportion of its profits to help its customers, their families and local communities.

Karl Elliott, marketing director at OneFamily, said:

“Plymstock Cricket Club is at the heart of its local community and it’s great to see that that the funding will make such a big difference.

“Our Community Awards are designed to benefit the causes closest to our customers’ hearts, giving community groups and projects the funding boost they need to continue to offer their vital work.

“The next Community Awards will launch on Monday 19 September, so I’d urge all Devon customers with an active policy to get involved and nominate a cause close to their heart.”

“Through the OneFamily Foundation, OneFamily aspires to make £5million available to its customers – to improve their lives or to help them make a positive difference to their local communities.”
