Orpington school’s garden gets the go ahead after £5,000 boost

A school in Orpington is celebrating after winning £5,000 in a national competition to help fund a new wellbeing garden that will help pupils relax.

Newstead Wood School was awarded the money for its wellbeing garden project as part of the OneFamily Foundation Community Awards, which are run twice-yearly and provide life-changing sums to organisations, groups and projects across the UK.

The school will use the funding to create a garden for pupils and staff which will be used for outdoor group work and exercise.

Pupils will grow produce, learn about nature and take ‘time out’ in a sensory area with herbs and calming and tactile plants.

The award will fund almost all the cost of raised beds, pathways, benches, soil, a greenhouse, shed and initial plants.

The school’s Providing Excellence Together fund, which is mainly voluntary contributions from parents, will meet the rest.

The project was nominated for a Community Award by OneFamily customer Sian Barr. The wellbeing garden was one of 24 organisations presented with an award in this latest round.

Assistant headteacher at Newstead Wood School Alan Blount said:

“The garden will add to our supportive learning environment by developing an outdoor space which will support our pupils’ mental health and significantly improve their wellbeing, helping them achieve their true potential.

“It will provide opportunities for our pupils to grow and share produce, and to develop their appreciation of the natural world.”

The Community Awards are run by OneFamily Foundation, set up by financial mutual, OneFamily, to redistribute a proportion of its profits to help its customers, their families and local communities.

Karl Elliott, marketing director at OneFamily, said:

“The wellbeing garden at Newstead Wood School will be a really valuable resource for the school community so it is fantastic to be able to give the project the start it needs.

“Our Community Awards are designed to benefit the causes closest to our customers’ hearts, giving community groups and projects the funding boost they need to continue to offer their vital work.

“The next Community Awards will launch in September, so I’d urge all Bromley customers with an active policy to get involved and nominate a cause close to their heart.”

Through the OneFamily Foundation, OneFamily aims to make £5million available to its customers – to improve their lives or to help them make a positive difference to their local communities.
