Gig rowing club races to victory with £25,000 award win

An Exmouth-based gig rowing club has received £25,000 to buy a new boat, after winning a national competition.

Exmouth Gig Club was awarded the money as part of the OneFamily Foundation Community Awards, which are run twice-yearly and provide life-changing sums to organisations, groups and projects across the UK.

The funding will be used to buy a new Cornish gig boat, which will enable the club to establish a new youth team and allow current members to train more often.

Exmouth Gig Club was nominated for a Community Award by Nicola Price, a OneFamily customer who is a member of the club. The project was one of 24 organisations presented with an award in this latest round.

Nicola Price said:

“The funding will make a fantastic difference to the club, and it’s great that by being a OneFamily customer I can introduce more people to the sport we love.”

“New Cornish gigs are very expensive to buy and have to be hand crafted by a specialist boat maker. We currently have one wooden gig boat that is more than 20 years old, and the new gig will enable our members to train more often as well as allowing us to take part in more competitions.”

The Community Awards are run by the OneFamily Foundation, an organisation set up by financial mutual, OneFamily, to redistribute a proportion of its profits to help its customers, their families and local communities.

Karl Elliott, marketing directorent manager at OneFamily, said:

“Exmouth Gig Club is a brilliant organisation that helps people across the local community stay active. The new boat will help them to continue their great work, as well as enabling young people across the area to get involved in this exciting sport.

“Our Community Awards are designed to benefit the causes closest to our customers’ hearts, giving community groups and projects the funding boost they need to continue to offer their vital work.

“The next Community Awards will launch on Monday 19 September, so I’d urge all customers in Exmouth with an active policy to get involved and nominate a cause close to their heart.”

Through the OneFamily Foundation, OneFamily aspires to make £5million available to its customers – to improve their lives or to help them make a positive difference to their local communities.
