Brighton support group for adults with autism wins national award

Posted in: Foundation Date added:

A Brighton social group that supports adults with Asperger’s and high functioning autism has secured £5,000 to improve its resources after winning a national award.

ASpire was awarded the funding by fellow Brighton-based organisation, financial mutual, OneFamily, through its Foundation Community Awards. The annual awards provide game-changing opportunities for community organisations, groups and projects across the UK.

ASpire is a social group and mentoring project that helps to improve the confidence of adults with autism. The group holds fortnightly social activities in venues across Brighton, such bowling, karaoke and bingo, that allows its members to meet their peers and improve their social skills.

The £5,000 award will allow ASpire to fund the cost of its hire room in Brighton, pay its specially trained staff and arrange more activities for its members.

ASpire was nominated for a Foundation Community Award by Clair Farenden, a OneFamily customer, who works at Brighton and Hove Impetus, the charity that hosts Aspire. The group was one of 41 organisations presented with an award in the latest round.

Jo Ivens, CEO Brighton and Hove Impetus said:

“We’re all thrilled that we’ve won this award, because it means we can fund key resources that will help to build our members’ confidence..

“We try to arrange activities that our members couldn’t usually do unless they had our support, such as going to the cinema or bowling, so having this money means we can continue to fund these activities.

“Service users say that our services are life changing, and now we can increase our support for the local people who need it most. We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who voted for us and made this win possible.”

Karl Elliott, marketing director at OneFamily, said:

“Lots of families in the community have already benefitted from ASpire’s services, and as a Brighton-based company ourselves, we’re thrilled to be supporting a project that’s local to us.

“Our Community Awards go right to the heart of what being part of a mutual society is all about, directly benefitting our customers and the causes closest to their hearts.

“Our next round of Community Awards is set to launch in Autumn 2017 and we’d encourage our Brighton-based customers to get involved and nominate a cause that’s important to them.”

Through its Foundation, OneFamily redistributes a proportion of its profits back to its customers, to help them to help their families, their communities and those they care about most. In 2016, 100,000 people directly benefited from Foundation Community Awards.

Over a period of five years, OneFamily aspires to make £5 million available through its Foundation, helping to improve the lives of its customers, their families and communities.
