Scouts become happy campers after national award win

A Lincolnshire scout group has secured £5,000 to buy new camping equipment, after winning a national award.

1st Grasby Scout Group was awarded the funding by financial mutual, OneFamily, through its Foundation Community Awards. The annual awards provide game-changing opportunities for community organisations, groups and projects across the UK.

The group has nearly 60 members across its Beavers, Cubs and Scouts sections, but a lack of camping equipment previously meant that only one section could go away on adventures at a time.

The new funding will now allow 1st Grasby Scouts to buy tents, stoves and outdoor equipment so that all of the children can go camping together.

1st Grasby Scout Group was nominated for a Foundation Community Award by Ian Bateman, a OneFamily customer and a group trustee. It was one of 41 organisations presented with an award in the latest round.

Ian said:

“Going away as one large group means that the younger children can learn new skills from the older members, while the older members can improve their leadership skills.

“Being able to buy the new equipment will also help us raise the profile of the group and will hopefully encourage more members to join.”

Karl Elliott, marketing director at OneFamily, said:

“Scout groups have always had such a great impact on communities, and 1st Grasby Scout Group is no different.

“Having enough kit for its 60 members to go on expeditions together will really help them develop their skills, and it’s fantastic that we’ve been able to help.

“Our next round of Community Awards are set to launch in the autumn and we’d encourage our Lincolnshire-based customers to get involved and nominate a cause that’s important to them.”

Through its Foundation, OneFamily redistributes a proportion of its profits back to its customers, to help them to help their families, their communities and those they care about most.  In 2016, 100,000 people directly benefited from Foundation Community Awards.

Over a period of five years, OneFamily aspires to make £5 million available through its Foundation, helping to improve the lives of its customers, their families and communities.
