OneFamily Foundation £5k award to help local new mums.

The future of Kendal and Windermere’s Breastfeeding Support Groups has been secured for the next six months thanks to a fantastic £5,000 cash boost from the OneFamily Foundation.

The groups’ organiser Ann Bruce, who is also a OneFamily customer, applied for a Community Award from the foundation to secure the funding that would enable the two groups to continue to meet. The group sessions are designed to give local mothers a place where they can get together, share experiences and get help and advice on breastfeeding, which can sometimes be difficult for new mums.

The funding will be used to pay for a registered Breastfeeding Counsellor to facilitate the groups, as well as paying for the space where the sessions are held. It will also be used to produce information booklets for mothers to take away with them as a source of extra support.

Ann commented: “We’re so pleased to have won the Community Award from OneFamily. The funding will help us secure a future for the groups for at least the next six months which is fantastic news.

“Although breastfeeding is a natural and beautiful thing, it can often be a lot harder than people expect. Getting reassurance and advice from other mothers can make a real difference when you are struggling to breastfeed and it is proven to significantly reduce the risk of post-natal depression.

“What’s more, mothers can make friends in the group, stopping them feeling isolated and helping them to grow their own network of friends in the community. We really want to thank OneFamily for the award and to our local community for voting for us.”

The OneFamily Foundation is a unique customer benefit fund, provided by mutual, OneFamily, which aspires to make £5million available to its customers over the next five years to make their lives and communities better.

OneFamily customers have been busy nominating community projects for funding and the public encouraged to show their support through an online vote.

OneFamily is a mutual organisation providing investments, savings, health and life insurance products to help families work together to meet the financial demands of modern life. As a customer owned business it is run for the benefit of its customers. The OneFamily Foundation redistributes a portion of the organisation’s profits, and aspires to make £5 million available to customers over the next five years to help them, their families and their local communities. The Foundation has also helped hundreds of customers with personal grants since its launch in 2014, and its funding pot is made possible due to the financial stability of the customer-owned organisation.

Anna Drabble, Head of Community at OneFamily said: “We are delighted that the Kendal and Windermere Breastfeeding Groups have been awarded the grant and we hope the funding will help them to continue their excellent work for the foreseeable future.

“It is important that mothers have a place they can go to in order to get the support they need and we’re thrilled to be in a position to help.”
