Parents and children alike were today celebrating the news that Highfield Adventure Playground (HAP) in the heart of Sharrow, Sheffield, had won a £5,000 OneFamily Foundation Community Award. The money will be used to expand the playground’s facilities.
Situated in an area of the UK that provides only 10 per cent of the recommended space for play, HAP offers a free, safe, adventurous environment providing positive and engaging activities for up to 400 children a week, many of whom come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Winning the £5,000 award means new equipment can be bought for the benefit of local children and the Sharrow community as a whole.
Lucinda Wakefield, OneFamily customer and a 'Friends of Adventures' committee member supporting Sharrow Community Forum, said: “As a mum raising two boys here in Sharrow, I know how vital HAP is to all local families in our community. My children and all their friends have grown up enjoying many happy hours here. Our community is a diverse one, and the playground really does help celebrate social cohesion. Children from all races and religions come together to play at HAP, come rain or shine.”
“It’s brilliant to know that thanks to OneFamily, not only can we build new equipment in the playground, but we’re also securing its future for generations to come. It’s something that benefits us all.”
The OneFamily Foundation is a unique customer benefit fund, provided by the mutual organisation, OneFamily, which aspires to make £5 million available to its customers over five years to make their lives and communities better.
The mutual organisation provides investments, savings, health and life insurance products to help families work together to meet the financial demands of modern life. As a customer-owned business it is run for the benefit of its customers. The OneFamily Foundation redistributes a portion of the organisation’s profits, to help customers, their families and their local communities make something better.
The Foundation has also helped hundreds of customers with personal grants since its launch in 2014, and its funding pot is made possible due to the financial stability of the customer-owned organisation.
There are four categories for each award, in order to ensure the Foundation gives a wider range of community projects an equal chance to access the funds. For this round of Community Awards there are four awards of £5,000 available in each category, with Highfield Adventure Playground winning in the Youth and affiliated organisations category.
James Hale, Customer Engagement Manager at OneFamily said: “Highfield Adventure Playground is exactly the kind of project we had in mind when we set up our Community Awards. As a community hub for the area’s families the playground brings adults and children together and is an important outdoor play space in an area where there are fewer play opportunities. We’re thrilled that local families in Sharrow will benefit from this funding, both now and in the future.”

The OneFamily Foundation (formerly the Engage Foundation) was set up to benefit our members, their families and the communities in which they live and work. There are two ways members can benefit; personal grants or community awards. A number of personal grants of up to £500 are available every month to help them, or someone close to them in times or hardship, or simply to make things a little better. Community awards are open for nominations in Spring and Autumn, with awards of up to £5,000 and £25,000 available to help fund projects in their local community.
