OneFamily Foundation £5k award will benefit more than 50 children.

A children’s respite home in Dorset is celebrating today after learning that they have won a £5,000 award from the OneFamily Foundation to fund essential refurbishments.

Diverse Abilities in Poole provides care for over 50 local children with severe physical and learning disabilities, as well as support for their families. OneFamily customer, Helen Mortimer, who has worked at the charity for the past five and half years, put forward the home for the community award, in the hope that should it win, the money would fund much needed improvements to the home. “You can imagine our delight on learning we’d won!” said Helen.

“The home was founded in 1995 and is in need of updating,” she added. “We have been fundraising tirelessly to raise the money necessary to transform the home into a more comfortable, more welcoming environment for the children who come here. The majority of the donations we receive go towards day-to-day running costs, so it’s not always easy to find the funds for essential maintenance. But thanks to this award from OneFamily, we can get the improvements underway. They’ll make a massive difference to the children, their families and everyone who works here.”

"This charity is so special; once you are involved in it, you never want to leave – it’s like a big family"

The award will enable the purchasing of essential items, including two new sofas, furnishings for the living areas and children’s bedrooms, plus a new oven and utensils for the kitchen where the children are encouraged to develop their cooking and baking skills.

Helen continued, “This charity is so special; once you are involved in it, you never want to leave – it’s like a big family. We want to take this chance to thank everyone who got behind us and voted, we really couldn’t have done it without you.”

The OneFamily Foundation is a unique customer benefit fund, provided by mutual organisation, OneFamily, which aspires to make £5million available to its members over the next five years to make their lives and communities better.

James Hale, Customer Engagement Manager at OneFamily said: “We are delighted to award £5,000 to Diverse Abilities. The charity works hard every day to create an environment that is welcoming for profoundly disabled young people and their families and we’re so pleased that we are able to help them be the best they can be. It’s essential that these types of initiatives get the support they deserve so that they can help as many people as possible and we’re thrilled to be in a position to be able to offer that support. We hope the award will help them continue their fantastic work for many years to come.”

OneFamily provides investments, savings, health and life insurance products to help families work together to meet the financial demands of modern life. As a customer-owned business it is run for the benefit of its customers. The OneFamily Foundation redistributes a portion of the organisation’s profits, and aspires to make £5 million available to customers over the next five years to help them, their families and their local communities. The Foundation has also helped hundreds of customers with personal grants since its launch in 2014, and its funding pot is made possible due to the financial stability of the customer-owned organisation.

There are four categories for each award, in order to ensure the Foundation gives a wider range of community projects an equal chance to access the funds. For this round of Community Awards there is one award of £25,000 and four awards of £5,000 available in each category. Diverse Abilities won one of the four awards available in the Health and Social Care category.
