Just 48 crimes were reported in Boscastle, Cornwall, between December 2010 and June 2012, making it the safest place in England and Wales to bring up a family. Compared against the size of the local population, the postcode is amongst the safest with just 0.05 crimes reported per head.
The top twenty locations were based on the total number of crimes reported and the finding follows analysis of crime statistics for all 2,400 postcodes by award-winning children's savings provider Family Investments.
Twelve of the twenty safest postcodes were found in to be in the South West of England including all of the top five. Less than one hundred crimes were reported in all of the top ten postcodes but Winkleigh and Montacute were joint second with 74 crimes.
Kate Moore, Head of Savings and Investments at Family Investments said, "Official ONS statistics published recently point to 800,000 fewer crimes being reported in England and Wales last year, and our analysis has identified those locations where crime is barely a factor for those families living there.
"Safety is an important consideration for parents when thinking about where to bring up a family. Rural areas are often said to have a strong community spirit and they come out well when looking at the total number of crimes. Of course, not every family will want to live in the countryside and there is some trade off between amenities and the advantages of low crime, green space and fresh air."
Family Investments' analysis collected data on the following:
- Anti-social behaviour
- Vehicle Crime
- Violent Crime
- All other crime reported to the police including criminal damage, shoplifting and drug offences.
This analysis of crime statistics formed part of Family Investments' annual Family Friendly Hotspots report, which also offered parents an online tool to help them search for their ideal postcode location.
